Man Armed With Knife Attacks Israeli Tent at Edmonton Heritage Festival, Arrested

A man armed with a knife attacked the Israeli tent at the International Heritage Festival in Edmonton, Canada, attempting to vandalize it before being subdued and arrested by security personnel. During his arrest, the suspect shouted, "All Zionists are racists," causing fear among festival attendees. Video footage circulated on social media showed the man trying to cut the tent's fabric and damage the display. Canadian reports identified the suspect as a man of Somali descent. Stacey Levitt-Right, CEO of the Jewish Federation of Edmonton, said that following the incident, dancers, staff, and volunteers were moved to a secure area amid concerns of escalation. After security cleared the area, performers were given the option to cancel or proceed with a shortened performance. Despite hearing chants of "All Zionists are racists" and "One solution, revolution," the dancers chose to perform, demonstrating determination and pride, according to Levitt-Right.

This attack is part of a troubling rise in antisemitic violence in Canada. According to B'nai Brith Canada, 27 antisemitic violent incidents have been recorded since the start of 2026, more than double the total for all of 2025. These incidents include shootings at Jewish institutions and other assaults targeting the Jewish community. The Edmonton police have launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the attack at the festival.
