New Middle East Defense Alliance Forms Amid Rising Iranian Threats and Regional Tensions

A new security alliance has been established between Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan in response to escalating threats from Iran and its allied militias in Iraq and Yemen. The agreement, signed in Mecca after nearly a year of negotiations, was attended by Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan, and Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, along with Pakistan's military chief General Asim Munir. This pact aims to enhance regional stability and security cooperation amid concerns over Iranian military activities and increased Israeli presence in the region.

The alliance follows intelligence received by Saudi Arabia about a planned large-scale attack by Iran-backed militias. CNN reported that Tehran has warned Gulf states against renewed US strikes, which could target Iranian Revolutionary Guard energy facilities in the Middle East. Iranian officials expressed dissatisfaction with the new pact, with Ibrahim Rezaei, a member of Iran's parliamentary National Security and Foreign Policy Committee, stating that a paper agreement with Turkey and Pakistan will not provide security, just as reliance on the US has failed for decades.

This tripartite alliance is distinct from a previous Saudi-Pakistan defense agreement signed in September 2025, which stipulated mutual defense in case of attack. The new pact comes as Saudi Arabia faces ongoing attacks from Iran and its proxies, including the Houthis in Yemen and Shiite militias in Iraq. These conflicts have also disrupted maritime traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, a critical energy transit route. Reuters highlighted that the three countries are concerned about both Iran's military policies and Israel's growing military activities in the region, alongside doubts about the US's ability to contain the escalation.
