New Regional Defense Pact Between Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Launches Amid Israeli Concerns

Senior officials from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia convened in Istanbul for the inaugural meeting of a newly formed regional defense alliance, a development that has raised concerns in Israel. The meeting, attended by foreign and defense ministers as well as military chiefs of staff, marks the official launch of the defense pact signed by the three nations earlier this month.

The agenda for the discussions reportedly includes strengthening the defense capabilities of the member states, enhancing joint operational capabilities and coordination between their armed forces, and deepening cooperation in the defense industries, potentially including joint development and production of defense systems. A key provision of the agreement stipulates that an armed attack against one member state will be considered an attack against all three, mirroring Article 5 of the NATO treaty.

The formation of this alliance comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Recent drone attacks in Saudi Arabia, attributed to the Houthis in Yemen, highlight the region's volatility and could potentially test the new defense pact early on. The alliance is seen by its members as a means to bolster their collective deterrence against aggression.

Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia have not concealed their shared apprehension regarding Israel's regional military activities, particularly in light of recent Israeli actions in Syria. Turkey has indicated that the alliance is not necessarily exclusive and could expand to include other nations, with Egypt mentioned as a potential candidate, though reports suggest Cairo has declined due to concerns about potential pressure from Israel and the UAE.
