New Regional Defense Pact Between Turkey, Pakistan, Saudi Arabia Holds First Meeting

Senior officials from Turkey, Pakistan, and Saudi Arabia convened in Istanbul on Monday for the inaugural meeting of a new regional defense alliance, a development that has raised concerns in Israel. The gathering marks the first official session of the joint committee established under a defense cooperation agreement signed by the three nations earlier this month.

The meeting included the foreign and defense ministers, as well as the chiefs of general staff from the three countries. Discussions were expected to focus on strengthening defense capabilities, enhancing joint operational capabilities and coordination between their armed forces, and deepening cooperation in the defense industries, potentially including joint development and production of defense systems.

The defense pact, which operates on a principle similar to NATO's Article 5 where an attack on one member is considered an attack on all, aims to bolster the collective deterrence of the three nations. This collective security arrangement is seen by some as a response to perceived regional threats, with Turkey, Saudi Arabia, and Pakistan reportedly sharing concerns about Israel's regional military actions.

The formation of this alliance comes amid heightened tensions in the Middle East. Recent drone attacks in the Persian Gulf and the Red Sea, including an incident where a Patriot missile battery in Saudi Arabia intercepted a drone swarm, highlight the volatile security environment. The pact could face its first test sooner than anticipated if regional conflicts escalate and directly impact member states.

Turkey has indicated that the alliance is not necessarily a closed bloc and could expand to include other nations, with Egypt mentioned as a potential candidate. However, reports suggest Egypt declined an invitation due to concerns about potential pressure from Israel and the UAE. Officials emphasized that the new alliance is not intended to replace existing security partnerships.
