Two Eye Cornea Infections Linked to Parasite in Sea of Galilee Water
The Israeli Ministry of Health has reported two recent cases of corneal eye infections caused by the parasite Microsporidium found in the waters of the Sea of Galilee. Both patients swam in the lake in late June and early July. This parasite can lead to eye inflammation and potentially impair vision. Despite these cases, the Ministry emphasizes that drinking the water from the Sea of Galilee poses no risk and swimming in the lake remains safe. Individuals who have swum in the Sea of Galilee and experience symptoms such as eye redness, pain, or a foreign body sensation should promptly consult an ophthalmologist. Symptoms typically appear between one to three weeks after exposure.
