Israeli Navy Conducts Largest Exercise Since October to Strengthen Regional Maritime Power

The Israeli Navy is conducting its largest multi-day exercise since October 7, focusing on securing Israel's critical maritime supply routes. Approximately 98% of Israel's imports arrive by sea, making control of these waters vital for the country's economy and security. The exercise involves over 1,000 personnel from missile boat flotilla 3, submarine flotilla 7, naval commando unit 13, and security flotillas 914 and 916, practicing scenarios ranging from defending strategic assets like the Tamar, Leviathan, and Karish gas rigs to deep strikes far inland.

The drills highlight the strategic importance of maritime dominance, especially in light of recent tensions around the Strait of Hormuz and Bab al-Mandeb, where control of sea lanes can disrupt entire nations economically. Israeli Navy Commander Major General Eyal Harel, who took command in April 2024, is advancing an ambitious plan to transform the navy into a regional maritime power. This includes expanding the missile boat fleet from 15 to potentially 21 vessels, acquiring multi-mission "Reshef" ships, and strengthening international partnerships from Greece to African countries such as Ethiopia and Somaliland.

The exercise also tested responses to maritime protest flotillas, employing tactics to intercept and neutralize threats days before they reach Israeli shores. The navy's personnel, operating under strict communication blackouts during sea deployments, maintain high alertness and cohesion, embodying Israel's frontline defense. Despite the navy's tactical excellence, the commander acknowledges the challenges ahead, especially in a comprehensive conflict where multiple sea lanes and supply routes could be targeted simultaneously.

The exercise concluded with crews returning briefly to shore for resupply and rest before redeploying. The Israeli Navy continues to prepare for evolving regional threats, aiming to enhance its capabilities and maintain Israel's maritime security in a complex geopolitical environment.
