Parents Sue Israeli Education System for Negligence After Daughter's Suicide Due to Bullying

The parents of Advah Weinblum Ovadia, a 13-year-old girl who died by suicide about a year and a half ago, have filed a lawsuit seeking approximately 16 million shekels against the Israeli Ministry of Education, the municipality of Acre, her school, and the ORT network. The suit was submitted to the Tel Aviv District Court on Wednesday. They also sued Amidar, the housing company, alleging it failed to install protective bars on the sixth-floor apartment window from which Advah jumped to her death.

The lawsuit accuses the defendants of negligence and failure to fulfill their duties, directly leading to the tragedy. Advah, described as a sensitive autistic teenager, endured years of bullying and social exclusion by her classmates. The complaint highlights that the education system, which was supposed to protect her, repeatedly failed to address the bullying and even ostracized her further.

According to the parents, Advah suffered immense psychological distress and, unaware of the consequences of her actions due to her condition, was pushed by the defendants' neglect toward the fatal act. The family condemns the education system for ignoring its sacred responsibility to safeguard children. The case sheds light on the broader issue of bullying in schools, with other children sharing their experiences of harassment and lack of support from teachers.
