Israeli Football Legend Shimon Chernukha Dies at 78

Shimon Chernukha, one of the greatest players in the history of Beitar Jerusalem football club, passed away at the age of 78 on August 5, 2026. Chernukha played for Beitar Jerusalem during two periods, from 1966 to 1969 and again from 1971 to 1973. He was a key member of the team during the 1966-68 double season, which led Beitar Jerusalem to its first-ever promotion to the top division.

In addition to his time at Beitar, Chernukha was part of the Maccabi Netanya squad that won the Israeli championship in the 1970-71 season. After two years with Netanya, he returned to Beitar Jerusalem and retired from playing in 1973. Following his retirement, he coached in Beitar's youth department, guiding the youth team to the first league and nurturing future talents such as Aviram Baruchyan and Amit Ben Shushan.

Chernukha was also the first Beitar Jerusalem player to represent the Israeli national team, playing in a 1968 match against Belgium. Beitar Jerusalem owner Barak Abramov expressed his condolences, calling Chernukha a symbol of the club who proudly wore its emblem. Former youth player and coach Aviram Baruchyan remembered him as a dedicated and beloved figure who provided vital support during difficult times for the club.
