Israeli Football Legend Shimon Chernukha Dies at 78

Shimon Chernukha, one of the greatest players in Beitar Jerusalem's history, passed away at the age of 78 on August 5, 2026. Chernukha played for Beitar Jerusalem during two periods, from 1966 to 1969 and again from 1971 to 1973. He was a key member of the team during the 1966/68 double season, which marked Beitar Jerusalem's first promotion to the top division.

In addition to his achievements with Beitar, Chernukha was part of Maccabi Netanya's championship-winning squad in the 1970/71 season. After two years with Netanya, he returned to Beitar Jerusalem and retired from playing in 1973. Following his retirement, he coached in Beitar's youth department, leading the youth team to the first league and nurturing future stars such as Aviram Baruchyan and Amit Ben Shushan.

Chernukha was also the first Beitar Jerusalem player to represent the Israeli national team, playing in a 1968 match against Belgium. Beitar Jerusalem owner Barak Abramov expressed his condolences, calling Chernukha a symbol of the club who proudly wore its emblem. Aviram Baruchyan, who was coached by Chernukha in the youth ranks, praised him as a dedicated and beloved figure who inspired the team during difficult times.

Chernukha's legacy as a player, coach, and symbol of Beitar Jerusalem's spirit remains deeply respected within Israeli football. His contributions to the club and the sport are commemorated by fans and the club alike.
