Lebanese Delegation Pressures Israel to Limit Response to Hezbollah Violations in South Lebanon

During ongoing negotiations in Rome, the Lebanese delegation has sought to pressure Israel to scale back its military response to Hezbollah's violations along the southern Lebanon border. The talks, held over two days, involve Israeli and Lebanese representatives under U.S. auspices, with the Lebanese side hoping American pressure will moderate Israel's stance, particularly regarding threats against the Shiite village of Al-Mansouri in western southern Lebanon. Beirut's leadership is optimistic that the Trump administration's desire for successful talks will influence Israel's actions.

Hezbollah opposes the negotiations and aims to disrupt them by continuing provocations against the Israel Defense Forces (IDF). The group hopes these provocations will derail the talks and shift the Lebanese issue back into U.S.-Iran negotiations, which Hezbollah prefers to maintain Iranian influence in Lebanon.

In a significant development, the Israeli Air Force struck multiple Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon for the first time in weeks, including command centers, weapons depots, and infrastructure. The IDF stated these strikes were in response to Hezbollah breaching the ceasefire. Israeli officials indicated that the response is ongoing, with additional sensitive operations under consideration pending political approval.

The IDF clarified that Al-Mansouri, which recently received an evacuation notice, remains under Israeli control. Its residents entered the village under Lebanese army protection, violating an agreement signed between Israel and Lebanon in the United States. Meanwhile, Lebanon's internal political dynamics continue to affect the talks, exemplified by the exclusion of a Lebanese minister opposed to Hezbollah from the negotiations with Israel.
