Israeli Delegation Head Demands Halt to Lebanon Negotiations Amid Tensions

The seventh round of direct negotiations between Israel and Lebanon continued on Wednesday in Rome, coinciding with a wave of Israeli strikes against Hezbollah targets that violated the ceasefire. Earlier rounds had agreed to initiate a pilot phase involving the withdrawal of Israeli forces and the entry of the Lebanese army into certain areas. Lebanese media report efforts in Beirut to expand this pilot phase.

Reports indicate differing perceptions of the current talks: Lebanese sources describe a positive atmosphere, and the American mediators have conveyed optimism about progress. However, the Israeli side disputes these claims. According to Israeli correspondent Sharia Harush, Israeli Ambassador to the US and head of the Israeli delegation, Yechiel Leiter, requested the Americans to halt the talks about three hours before their scheduled conclusion due to repeated biased leaks from the Lebanese delegation.

Despite the continuation of talks, correspondent Noam Amir reports that the pilot phase in southern Lebanon is far from expectations. Hezbollah maintains control over large parts of the Lebanese army and dominates movement routes. The Lebanese army has already experienced two significant confrontations with Hezbollah. Moreover, Lebanese officers and soldiers are reluctant to search Hezbollah buildings due to fears of pre-planted explosives, leaving Hezbollah's operational freedom largely intact.

The ongoing tensions and challenges in implementing the pilot phase highlight the fragile security situation in southern Lebanon and complicate the peace process between Israel and Lebanon.
