Israeli Hyperpop Artist Nono Releases Long-Held Second Album 'The Shelved'

Israeli hyperpop singer Nono, born Naomi Aharoni-Gal, has released her previously shelved second album titled "The Shelved" nearly four years after writing it. The album was originally created in 2022 during a writing trip to Greece with her producer Ilai Ashdot, following the success of her debut album "Status" and hit single "Cute Boy." However, the outbreak of the prolonged war in Israel led her to put the album on hold, as its themes and tone no longer felt appropriate amid the national crisis.

Instead, Nono released a different album last year called "What Else," which reflected the extreme emotional swings of life in Israel, ranging from joy to melancholy. Now, feeling hopeful, she decided to share "The Shelved," a collection of ten short hyperpop tracks reminiscent of her early style. The album features playful, witty lyrics and upbeat beats, offering a lighter, danceable sound.

Nono explained that before this album, her songwriting mainly focused on personal heartbreak, but this project allowed her to explore broader themes. She described the creative process as challenging, recalling how she was physically exhausted and lost her voice during the initial writing sessions in Greece. The war's impact made her feel there was no room for songs about trivial matters, but now she believes there is space to embrace normal human experiences, including fun and silliness.

By releasing "The Shelved," Nono invites listeners to enjoy a different era of her music, with a fresh sound and sparkling production. The album's arrival marks a new chapter in her artistic journey, blending hope and danceable hyperpop energy amid Israel's complex reality.
