Hapoel Tel Aviv Awaits Medical Clearance to Finalize Douglas Awusu Signing

Hapoel Tel Aviv's medical team is reviewing the results of extensive medical tests conducted on Douglas Awusu, a 20-year-old winger recently acquired by Serbian champions Red Star Belgrade. The tests, completed late Tuesday in Belgrade, were sent to Israel for analysis, with a final decision expected Wednesday on whether Awusu will join Hapoel Tel Aviv. The club emphasized that all players purchased for significant fees undergo thorough medical evaluations regardless of prior injuries or rumors.

Awusu was bought by Red Star Belgrade in January for 2.2 million euros and nearly transferred to Czech club Viktoria Plzen this summer for 3.3 million euros, but failed their medical tests. Hapoel Tel Aviv also conducted due diligence with Viktoria Plzen and Serbian sources before proceeding. If cleared, Awusu will sign a contract and could be registered in time for upcoming Conference League playoff matches against Katowice, potentially playing as a winger or attacking midfielder in a flexible formation.

Awusu began his career in Ghana with Ascom FC before moving to Serbian club Radnik Surdulica in summer 2024. After scoring two goals in 32 league games his first season, he started his second season strongly with seven goals in 20 games, prompting Red Star's purchase. Serbian media praised his speed and technical ability, highlighting his threat to opposing defenses. Meanwhile, Hapoel Tel Aviv continues to seek additional signings as coach Eliniv Breda focuses on the upcoming matches.

The club previously set a record signing with Daniel Dappa from Maccabi Netanya for 1.8 million euros plus bonuses, indicating Awusu could become their most expensive acquisition if the deal completes. Awusu has not yet played this season and was not included in Red Star's Champions League qualifiers against Hapoel Be'er Sheva, leaving him available for registration in European competition if Hapoel Tel Aviv advances.
