Ultra-Orthodox Protesters Disrupt IDF Haredi Recruitment Event in Jerusalem

On Tuesday evening, dozens of extremist ultra-Orthodox protesters gathered outside a recruitment event for Haredi pathways into the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) held on Jaffa Street in Jerusalem. The protest was organized following a call circulated among anti-conscription groups urging demonstrators to arrive at the event entrance and oppose the recruitment efforts. Some protesters blocked a taxi carrying event organizers, verbally abused them, spat on the vehicle, and physically assaulted one participant.

Retired Brigadier General Ofer Winter, who was a speaker at the event, was confronted by protesters outside and subjected to shouting and insults. One protester accused him of heresy and betrayal of Judaism, to which Winter responded by rejecting the accusations. The protesters’ message, distributed in advance, condemned the recruitment event as a "devilish army" effort disguised as a Haredi framework, accusing organizers of trying to coerce yeshiva students into military service.

The demonstration escalated with protesters chanting slogans against IDF conscription and attempting to block entrance to the event, including chasing after individuals suspected of promoting recruitment. Police intervened to disperse the crowd and facilitate access, facing verbal abuse including accusations of being "Nazis" and "murderers." One protester was arrested during the clashes.

Winter condemned the extremist faction, stating they do not represent the broader Haredi community and vowed to continue supporting Haredi integration into the IDF. He called for firm action against extremists without harming Torah scholars. Rafi Flerstein, who was attacked during the protest, described being violently assaulted, having his kippah taken, and his computer nearly stolen. He criticized the use of violence and intimidation, especially against vulnerable individuals, emphasizing that such behavior does not honor Torah values.

The event highlighted ongoing tensions within the ultra-Orthodox community regarding military conscription and the efforts to integrate Haredi youth into the IDF, with extremist factions actively opposing these initiatives through protests and violence.
