Extremists Attack Haredim and Draft Supporters at Jerusalem IDF Recruitment Event

On Tuesday evening in Jerusalem, extremist protesters gathered outside an event unveiling IDF recruitment tracks for the Haredi community. The demonstrators blocked attendees, including Haredim interested in enlistment and those suspected of encouraging recruitment. During the protest, some extremists physically assaulted attendees by spitting, kicking, and verbally abusing them, with footage showing attempts to breach the event venue itself. At least one protester was arrested, and Border Police forces secured the area to protect visitors.

Political figures condemned the violence. Avigdor Lieberman, leader of the Yisrael Beiteinu party, tweeted about the violent draft dodgers harassing those serving in the military, promising stricter enforcement in the next government. Yoaz Hendel, chairman of the Reservists’ Party, criticized the persecution of young Haredim seeking to learn about service options, calling the violence disgraceful and demanding accountability from security officials and political leaders. Hendel emphasized that draft evasion is supported while enlistees receive cold shoulders, calling this a betrayal of Torah values and a threat to Israel’s security.

The event and ensuing clashes highlight ongoing tensions within Israeli society over Haredi military service and the broader debate on draft compliance. Security forces remain vigilant as similar events and protests continue to provoke confrontations in Jerusalem.
