Rami Levy Proves Cheapest for Weekly Grocery Top-Ups, Yochananof Most Expensive

A recent price comparison among leading Israeli supermarket chains reveals significant cost differences for typical weekly grocery top-ups. The study, conducted on a Tuesday using the Prices website, found that Rami Levy offers the lowest total basket price at 810.50 shekels, while Yochananof's basket costs 936.46 shekels, marking a 125.96 shekel (15.5%) gap for the same set of products. This disparity could translate into substantial annual savings for families who shop regularly.

The comparison focused on common household items such as dairy, vegetables, fruits, bread, pasta, and dry goods. Individual product price gaps were also notable; for example, a 500-gram pack of Osem shell pasta costs 4.90 shekels at Rami Levy and Yochananof but 6.90 shekels at Mahsanei HaShuk, a 41% difference. Similarly, a 750-gram loaf of 100% whole wheat rye bread from Angel Bakery is priced at 12.90 shekels at Rami Levy and Yochananof, compared to 16.50 shekels at Mahsanei HaShuk, nearly 28% higher.

The findings underscore the value of price comparison even for midweek grocery top-ups rather than just monthly bulk shopping. Consumers are advised to monitor promotions and compare prices on staple products frequently found in shopping baskets, as these often show the largest price variations. This approach can lead to meaningful savings over time.
