A recent price comparison of typical grocery baskets for Friday dinner reveals significant cost differences among Israeli supermarket chains. The study, conducted via the Prices website, examined a basket including meat, fruits, vegetables, dry goods, and other weekly essentials. Rami Levy emerged as the cheapest option, with the basket costing 1,563.31 shekels, while the most expensive was at the Universe chain, priced at 1,844.38 shekels. This represents a price gap of 281.07 shekels, or roughly 18%.

Notable price disparities were found in specific products, such as frozen Amnon fish fillet with skin, which sold for 19.90 shekels at Victory but doubled to 39.90 shekels at Universe. Similarly, frozen puff pastry dough (600 grams) was priced at 29.90 shekels at Rami Levy versus 34.90 shekels at Victory, a 17% difference.

The findings highlight the potential savings consumers can achieve by comparing prices across supermarket chains, especially when purchasing more expensive items like meat and fish for traditional Friday meals. The report advises shoppers not to rely solely on habitual shopping patterns, as small price differences on individual items can accumulate to significant amounts at checkout.
