Former Mossad Chief Dedi Barnea Joins US Defense Firm Amid Israeli Security Concerns

Dedi Barnea, former head of Israel's Mossad intelligence agency, has joined a major US defense company, ONDES, shortly after concluding his tenure. Barnea, who gained global recognition for his role in operations against Iran, is now involved in selling advanced weaponry to international security officials, marking a shift from intelligence to defense commerce.

ONDES, a Nasdaq-listed company valued at $4.8 billion, has significantly expanded its presence in Israel by acquiring several local defense firms specializing in drones, AI mission planning, air defense systems, robotics, and heavy engineering equipment. The company has recruited numerous retired senior Israeli defense officials, including former Rafael executives and IDF officers, to lead its Israeli operations.

Despite these expansions, ONDES faced a major hurdle when attempting to acquire control of Amperst, the developer of the command and control system for Israel's Iron Dome missile defense. The Israeli Ministry of Defense blocked the deal due to concerns over transferring control of critical strategic software to foreign hands. The transaction remains under prolonged security review, partly because ONDES raised $1 billion from an undisclosed investor.

Israeli defense officials worry about potential leakage of sensitive technological knowledge and operational experience accumulated through national budgets. Questions remain about the Ministry of Defense's ability to oversee ONDES's global transactions involving Israeli technology. This concern is heightened by parallels to other US defense firms with Israeli branches, such as Covenant, which develops cruise missiles with possible Israeli technological input and markets them internationally, including to Germany.

Following the announcement of Barnea's recruitment, ONDES's stock surged 8%. Details of Barnea's compensation package will be disclosed in the company's upcoming financial reports.
