IDF Intensifies Targeted Killings in Gaza Under Southern Commander's Initiative

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have sharply increased targeted killings across the Gaza Strip in recent weeks, according to military sources. These operations, led by the Southern Command under Major General Yaniv Asor, are based on intelligence breakthroughs from the Shin Bet and Military Intelligence Directorate, focusing on identifying militant methods and operational opportunities. Many of the targeted strikes occur when suspects are traveling in vehicles after leaving hiding places.

This intensified campaign is putting significant pressure on senior Hamas figures and their security apparatus, which is reportedly working around the clock to identify Israeli collaborators and responding with violence against them. A senior security official noted that Hamas is cautious about retaliating with fire against the IDF to avoid provoking a harsher Israeli response, including deep incursions into Palestinian territory.

Despite the risks, Israeli officials acknowledge the large-scale targeted killings carry substantial dangers, including potential American intervention. U.S. officials, preoccupied with the Iranian arena, have so far refrained from interfering in Israeli policy as long as preparations to receive tens of thousands of Palestinians in Rafah are not delayed. However, American pressure to advance the Trump peace plan in Gaza continues, though no clear timeline or deployment of an international peace force has been established. Another security source warned that the U.S. might impose a complete ceasefire on Israel, similar to previous interventions in Lebanon, if the targeted killings escalate further.
