Vandals Deface Amos Oz Memorial Sign in Arad, Prompting Police Complaint

In Arad, an unauthorized individual vandalized a memorial sign dedicated to the late Israeli author Amos Oz, covering it with paint. The sign, located near the historic home where Oz lived and wrote most of his works, was quickly restored by municipal cleaning crews. The Arad municipality filed a police complaint following the incident, condemning the act as a serious offense against public property and the shared community space.

Amos Oz, a recipient of the Israel Prize for literature, moved to Arad in 1985 with his family due to his son's asthma. He regarded the city as a microcosm of Israeli society and lived there until his death in 2018 after battling cancer. His daughter, Fania Oz-Salzberger, expressed concern over the vandalism and emphasized the importance of public response.

The municipality stressed its commitment to preserving cultural heritage and public spaces, vowing to hold those responsible accountable. The security officer of Arad is actively pursuing the investigation with the Israeli police to identify and prosecute the perpetrators.
