Vandals Deface Amos Oz Memorial Sign in Arad, Municipality Files Police Complaint

In Arad, unknown vandals defaced a memorial sign dedicated to the late Israeli author Amos Oz, covering it with paint. The sign, located near Oz's historic home where he lived and wrote most of his books, was quickly restored by municipal cleaning crews. The Arad municipality condemned the act as a serious offense against public property and cultural heritage, filing a police complaint and vowing to identify and prosecute those responsible.

Amos Oz, a recipient of the Israel Prize for literature, passed away in 2018 after battling cancer. He moved to Arad in 1985 with his family due to his son's asthma, making the southern city between the Negev and Judean Desert his longtime home and creative base. Oz regarded Arad as a microcosm of Israeli society, describing it as a harmonious community.

Oz's eldest daughter, Fania Oz-Salzberger, expressed concern over the incident, emphasizing the importance of public response. The municipality reaffirmed its commitment to protecting public spaces, cultural assets, and freedom of expression against vandalism and criminal acts.
