Vandals Deface Amos Oz Memorial Sign in Arad, Mayor Condemns Act

Unknown individuals vandalized a tourist sign commemorating the late Israeli author Amos Oz, located in front of his home in Arad, the city’s mayor Yair Maayan announced on Monday. The sign, which highlights Oz’s significant literary contributions and his status as one of Israel’s most prominent and internationally translated writers, was defaced early Monday morning. Mayor Maayan described the act as a "shameful and despicable deed by destructive criminals" attempting to impose their views on public space and disrupt city life.

Amos Oz lived in Arad for over twenty years, where he wrote most of his works. He received numerous prestigious literary awards, including the Israel Prize for Literature in 1998, the Goethe Prize in 2005, the Heinrich Heine Prize in 2008, and the Bialik Prize. Oz was also frequently mentioned as a candidate for the Nobel Prize in Literature.

Following the vandalism, municipal workers promptly cleaned the sign, and the city’s security officer will file a police complaint to pursue the perpetrators. Mayor Maayan emphasized that the city will not tolerate any attempts to harm public spaces or undermine community values.
