Arad Mayor Files Police Complaint Over Ultra-Orthodox Defacement of IDF Memorial Stickers

Ya'ir Ma'ayan, the mayor of Arad, announced on Thursday that he filed a police complaint against an extremist ultra-Orthodox faction that desecrated memorial stickers honoring fallen IDF soldiers. The group posted anti-women employment posters over the memorial stickers, which were placed in the city as part of a campaign remembering the fallen. The posters opposed a new high-tech employment program for ultra-Orthodox women launched in cooperation with the Ministry of Defense.

Mayor Ma'ayan condemned the extremists as "violent criminal offenders" and suggested they likely reside outside Arad. He emphasized the city is using surveillance footage to identify those responsible and vowed to maintain public order. The incident follows recent tensions in Arad between the ultra-Orthodox and secular communities, including clashes sparked by protests against yeshiva student conscription and related roadblocks two months ago.

Last week, a disturbing video circulated showing a single ultra-Orthodox man vandalizing posters featuring women’s images in Arad, prompting another police complaint for property damage. The municipality pledged strict enforcement and penalties to deter such acts. These events highlight ongoing friction in Arad’s public space between different social groups.
