Caricature Exhibition on Ultra-Orthodox IDF Draft Vandalized Ahead of Tel Aviv Animix Festival

On August 3, 2026, just before the opening of the 26th annual Animix Festival at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, a caricature exhibition addressing the contentious issue of ultra-Orthodox Jewish conscription into the Israel Defense Forces was vandalized. The exhibition, titled "The Black Army," featured works by prominent Israeli cartoonists and focused on the ultra-Orthodox community's opposition to military service, a highly debated topic in Israeli society.

According to festival organizers, a young man wearing a kippah verbally confronted the production team and the Cinematheque's CEO, Tomer Cohen, before tearing down several pieces from the exhibition. Attempts by staff to detain him until police arrived were unsuccessful, as the police did not come, and the individual left the scene in a taxi.

Nissim (Nosko) Hezkiyahu, the festival's artistic director, expressed regret over the incident, noting it was the first such event in the festival's 26-year history. He emphasized that while extremists sometimes challenge freedom of expression, this act only underscores the exhibition's importance. The organizers are working to restore the damaged works, and the exhibition is scheduled to open to the public as planned the following day.

The Animix Festival, running from August 4, 2026, will feature animation screenings, comic and caricature exhibitions, and meetings with creators, continuing its tradition of engaging with pressing social and political issues in Israel.
