Caricature Exhibition on Ultra-Orthodox Draft Resistance Vandalized Before Tel Aviv Animix Festival

Parts of the caricature exhibition "The Black Army," which addresses the ultra-Orthodox community's resistance to military conscription, were vandalized on Monday at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque plaza. The incident occurred during the exhibition's setup, one day before the international Animix Festival for animation, caricature, and comics was scheduled to open. According to festival organizers, a young man wearing a kippah verbally confronted the production team and the Cinematheque CEO, Tomer Cohen, before tearing and damaging parts of the displays. Afterward, the suspect attempted to flee, but staff pursued him and called the police. However, after a prolonged wait with no police arrival, the suspect left the scene in a taxi.

The exhibition features works by Israeli cartoonists highlighting the social tensions surrounding the conscription of yeshiva students. Despite the damage, the festival team confirmed they are restoring the artworks and that the exhibition will open as planned. Nissim (Nosko) Hakakiyahu, the festival's artistic director, described the event as unprecedented in Animix's 26-year history. He emphasized that the festival regularly addresses diverse social and political issues and that this incident will not deter them. "We regret that some try to harm freedom of expression, but this act will not intimidate us," Hakakiyahu said. "Our team is already working on repairs, and the exhibition is expected to open tomorrow as scheduled."

The Animix Festival will commence tomorrow at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, featuring a variety of events, screenings, and exhibitions in animation and comics.
