IDF Central Command Chief Avi Blot Faces Sudden Replacement Announcement Amid Political Storm

Major General Avi Blot, commander of the IDF Central Command and a graduate of the Ali pre-military academy, has become the center of a political controversy after Defense Minister Israel Katz announced live on Channel 14 his intention to replace Blot with Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa. Blot, known for his aggressive operational approach "to act first and decisively," is deeply rooted in the settlement movement and has received praise from coalition leaders, including Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who called him "the best general the settlement has ever had."

The announcement surprised many, including the IDF spokesperson who clarified that the replacement was not coordinated with Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir and that no command changes were planned during this sensitive period. The tension followed Blot's recent appeal against Katz's decision to accept an appeal regarding a restriction order on Tal Yinon Dardik, suspected of abusing Palestinians. Katz had also held an unusual meeting with the detainee, who is on a hunger strike.

Blot's biography highlights his strong ties to the settlement enterprise. Born in Jerusalem to a religious family with a history of military service, he grew up in Neve Tzuf in the Binyamin region and studied at the Himlperv High School and the Bnei David pre-military academy. He enlisted in 1994 in the Paratroopers Brigade's 890th Battalion, served in South Lebanon, commanded Battalion 101 during Operation Cast Lead where he was wounded, and later led elite units including Maglan and the Commando Brigade. He also served as military secretary to Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Prior to his current role, he commanded the Judea and Samaria Division.

Blot is known for his "offensive defense" strategy in the West Bank, proactively confronting militants in their areas and expanding operations in refugee camps such as Jenin, Tulkarm, and Nablus. Since his appointment in July 2024, he has led extensive operations including "Summer Camps" and "Iron Wall," which contributed to a significant drop in terror attacks. Despite this, nationalist crime against Palestinians surged, which Blot condemned as terrorism, emphasizing its illegality and immorality.

While facing criticism from far-right activists, Blot continues to receive support from settlement council heads and political figures like Smotrich, who recently reaffirmed his high regard for Blot. Katz himself had praised Blot as the best commander in decades. The current dispute, however, has turned Blot into a focal point of a broader political conflict extending beyond the question of his replacement.
