IDF Considers Promoting Avi Blot to Head of Military Intelligence Amid Defense Minister Dispute

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are reportedly considering promoting Major General Avi Blot to head the Military Intelligence Directorate (AMAN). Senior military officials highlight Blot's operational experience and broad understanding of field realities as key qualifications for the role. This development comes amid tensions between Defense Minister Israel Katz and IDF Chief of Staff Lieutenant General Eyal Zamir following Katz's public announcement of Blot's replacement as Central Command chief.

Last week, Katz announced live on Channel 14 that Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa would succeed Blot as Central Command chief, prompting the IDF to clarify that Zamir had no intention of moving senior officers until 2027. In a recorded conversation, Zamir assured Blot of his full support and confirmed he would remain in his post until 2027, citing his effective work in reducing terrorism in the West Bank. The two met later that evening with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who reportedly expressed anger at Katz's handling of the situation and demanded clarifications.

Katz later stated that Blot was not dismissed and praised his performance, denying any dispute between them. Zamir ordered a freeze on senior officer appointments until early 2027, warning of a sensitive period regarding Iran and potential unrest in the West Bank. Katz's office blamed Zamir for overstepping his authority. Katz also emphasized that the appointment process for Bar-Kalifa had begun months earlier, refuting claims that the decision followed the recent interview where calls to dismiss Blot were made.

The controversy intensified after Katz accused former Deputy Chief of Staff Yair Golan of threatening to dismiss Blot, warning that Golan's potential appointment as defense minister could lead to reinstating old military leadership, which Katz argued would harm Israeli settlements and security. Earlier reports revealed Katz had sent a stern message to Blot over the arrest of right-wing activist Tal Yinon Dradik, which Blot contested. Dradik's brother serves as a parliamentary advisor to Likud MK Amit Halevi, a prominent advocate for Dradik's release alongside Katz and other officials.

The ongoing dispute highlights internal tensions within Israel's defense establishment amid heightened security challenges in the West Bank and regional concerns.
