Defense Minister Katz Denies Live Dismissal of Central Command Chief Amid Political Dispute

Defense Minister Israel Katz denied claims that he called for the dismissal of Central Command Chief Major General Avi Blot during a live broadcast, calling such reports "absolute lies" and part of a political campaign against the government. Katz clarified that the appointment of Blot's successor, Major General Dado Bar-Kalifa, was already underway months before the interview, following the Chief of Staff's recommendation and Katz's approval. He emphasized that when a participant in the interview called for Blot's dismissal, he immediately responded "no," and the appointment process was not influenced by the interview.

Despite Katz's statement, security sources indicated that the Chief of Staff had not finalized Bar-Kalifa's appointment, with several candidates still considered. Katz accused political opponents of trying to distract from concerns about potential appointments under a future government led by Yair Golan, which he suggested could harm Israeli settlements and security.

Meanwhile, leaders of the Yesha Council, representing West Bank settlements under Blot's jurisdiction, expressed mixed reactions. While condemning Katz's announcement, they also supported the defense minister's efforts to strengthen security and settlement development. Some local council heads praised Blot's leadership and criticized Katz's move as politically motivated ahead of elections.

The controversy erupted after Katz announced Bar-Kalifa as Blot's replacement during a televised interview, following Blot's objection to Katz's decision to revoke restrictions on Tal Yinon Dardik, a detainee accused of abusing Palestinians. The Chief of Staff later stated that Katz's remarks were not coordinated with him and that no command changes would be made during this sensitive period without proper approval.

On the same day, Chief of Staff Eyal Zamir announced a freeze on general officer appointments until early 2027 due to the ongoing election cycle, effectively extending Blot's tenure as Central Command chief until at least summer 2027.
