Google AI Scans Gmail Emails by Default, Users Urged to Disable Smart Features

Google's artificial intelligence system, Gemini, is capable of scanning and analyzing sensitive emails and documents stored in Gmail accounts, including bank statements, tax documents, and medical correspondence. This occurs through default hidden settings that grant the AI full access to users' private data. Many Gmail users are unaware that their personal information is routinely processed by these AI tools.

To protect privacy, users should disable these smart features by accessing Gmail's desktop settings under "Smart features and personalization" and unchecking the options that enable AI processing in Gmail, Chat, and Meet. Additionally, users must adjust settings in Google Workspace and disable smart features in the Gmail mobile app. It is also recommended to delete the Gemini activity history via Google's MyActivity page.

Security experts advise separating email accounts for sensitive communications, such as legal, financial, or medical matters, by using encrypted email services like Proton Mail. Users can maintain a primary Gmail account for newsletters and everyday communication while managing confidential conversations in a more secure, separate inbox. Proper configuration and digital identity management are essential to prevent personal data from being exploited by large tech companies' algorithms.
