Google Ends Gmail’s 'Send As' Feature for External Email Accounts Starting January 2027

Google announced it will discontinue the popular "Send As" feature in Gmail starting January 2027, which currently allows users to send emails from external accounts like Yahoo or Outlook directly through the Gmail interface. This change will also include ending support for Gmailify, which applies Google's spam filtering and organization to third-party accounts, and stopping POP protocol email fetching through browsers.

The company explained the decision aims to reduce costly maintenance resources. However, users with Google aliases or paid Google Workspace accounts will retain the "Send As" functionality. The Gmail mobile app will still support multiple accounts for reading emails but will no longer allow replying from external addresses via Gmail.

This move has sparked criticism from users who feel Google is pushing them toward paid plans such as Google Workspace or Google One. Those managing family domains will still receive incoming emails in Gmail but cannot reply without revealing their private external address. Users are advised to prepare for the change by switching to desktop email clients like Thunderbird or Outlook, using dedicated email providers, or upgrading to paid Google services to maintain seamless management of multiple email addresses.

With the change set for January 2027, users have several months to adjust their email workflows accordingly.
