Google Android Alerts Israeli Residents of Egypt Earthquake Using AI-Powered Early Warning System

In the early hours between Sunday and Monday, a 5.7 magnitude earthquake struck Egypt, with tremors felt across various parts of Israel. Around 3:00 a.m., residents in southern Israel and near the Dead Sea received automatic earthquake warnings on their Android phones, sent by Google. These alerts, which popped up as notifications, indicated an estimated magnitude of 5.9 and were only received by users within predefined danger zones. The Home Front Command did not issue any official statement regarding the event.

Google’s Android Earthquake Alerts System leverages billions of Android devices worldwide as a global sensor network. Using built-in accelerometers, these devices detect the initial seismic waves (P-waves) and send encrypted signals to Google servers. When multiple devices in the same area report tremors simultaneously, the system confirms an earthquake and estimates its strength. In some regions, such as the U.S. West Coast, the system also integrates data from ground-based seismological networks.

The alert system categorizes warnings into two levels: a "watch alert" for earthquakes of magnitude 4.5 and above, which triggers a pop-up notification without loud alarms, and an "action alert" for stronger quakes that activates the screen and emits a loud siren, instructing users to seek shelter. This service is available in over 90 countries for Android devices running version 5.0 or higher with location services enabled.

The project, managed by Professor Yossi Matias, former CEO of Google Israel, uses artificial intelligence and machine learning to analyze vast amounts of real-time environmental data, including satellite imagery and climate models, to provide early warnings for natural disasters such as earthquakes and floods. This technology aims to give people precious seconds or even days to take protective measures before disaster strikes.
