Maccabi Haifa Releases Club's Most Expensive Foreign Signing After Two Disappointing Years

Maccabi Haifa officially announced on Monday the release of attacking midfielder Matias Nahuel after two seasons with the club. Nahuel, a Spanish-Argentine player, joined Haifa in the summer of 2024 from Polish club Slask Wroclaw for approximately 2.5 million euros, making him the most expensive foreign signing in the club's history. The club had hoped Nahuel would become the professional leader following the departure of Charron Shiri, but he struggled to integrate, suffered a long-term injury, and failed to meet expectations.

During his time at Haifa, Nahuel made only 24 appearances across all competitions and scored three goals. He was even given the number 10 jersey ahead of the previous season, but this did not lead to a breakthrough. Last season, he was loaned to Polish side Jagiellonia in an attempt to regain form, where he played 16 matches, scored no goals, and provided one assist. Now 29 years old, Nahuel, who previously played for clubs including Villarreal, Olympiacos, Real Betis, Deportivo La Coruña, Tenerife, and Real Oviedo, as well as Spain's youth national teams, is set to start a new chapter in his career after leaving Israel.
