Maccabi Haifa's Most Expensive Foreign Player Describes Difficult Time in Israel

Matias Nahuel, who signed with Maccabi Haifa in summer 2024 as a European U19 champion with Spain, was the club's most expensive foreign signing at about 1.9 million euros. The club expected him to lead them to new heights, but after two difficult years, he was released this week. In an interview in Spain, Nahuel revealed the severe challenges he faced during his time in Israel, calling it one of the hardest periods of his life.

Nahuel recounted that shortly after signing, a ceasefire was in place, but soon after arrival, he and his family were forced to move hotels due to impending bombings. This deeply affected him and his focus on football, as he constantly worried about his family’s safety and the ongoing conflict. He described his experience in Israel as a "complete ordeal," especially mentally, struggling to reconcile living in a country facing daily conflicts.

He emphasized that his mental distress contributed to an injury and impacted his performance on the field. Nahuel also clarified his stance on the war, stating he does not support any political party or ideology but believes in helping people rather than killing. He expressed hope for peace and an end to the violence causing innocent deaths.
