Tomas Satoransky Explains Move to Hapoel Tel Aviv Amid Health and Role Changes

After six years in the NBA and two long stints with Barcelona, Czech point guard Tomas Satoransky is starting a new chapter with Hapoel Tel Aviv. In a detailed interview in the Czech Republic, he discussed his decision to join the Israeli club, the team's base in Sofia, Bulgaria, and his plans to reduce physical strain following persistent back pain. Satoransky confirmed that Hapoel will begin the season with its base in Sofia, noting that the team will fly to Israel every weekend for league games, both home and away. However, with only five foreign players allowed on the roster, rotation among the foreigners is expected. He appreciated the possibility of skipping some league games to stay in Sofia, seeking a less demanding schedule.

Satoransky clarified his expected role, stating he will not be the primary point guard, with Vasilije Micić holding that position. He anticipates being the second or third point guard, a role he actively sought within the EuroLeague context. He recalled that Barcelona had promised less playing time in the domestic league, but due to no additional signings, he ended up playing more than expected. Remaining in the EuroLeague was a key motivation for his move, despite health challenges. Over the past year and a half, he has suffered from lower back pain related to facet joint issues, likely caused by cumulative career overload, which made recovery and maintaining game rhythm difficult.

Reflecting on his time at Barcelona, Satoransky said the physical toll was extreme, with little recovery time between EuroLeague and Spanish league games. The move to Hapoel represents a professional and mental shift, as he no longer wants to carry the team’s burden alone. Despite wanting to reduce physical load, he remains highly motivated to compete and win, especially in the EuroLeague. He expressed enthusiasm about joining Hapoel Tel Aviv’s ambitious project under owner Ofer Yanai, aiming to win the EuroLeague title.
