Hapoel Tel Aviv Signs Tomas Satoransky, Attracted by Flexible Living in Bulgaria

Hapoel Tel Aviv basketball club has signed Tomas Satoransky, a 34-year-old point guard with NBA and Barcelona experience, ahead of the upcoming season. In an interview from the Czech Republic following his signing, Satoransky revealed that one of the main reasons for joining the Israeli team was the opportunity to live in Sofia, Bulgaria, without the obligation to travel to Israel every week for league games. This arrangement offers him a less demanding schedule, allowing him to stay in Bulgaria on some weekends instead of playing in Israel.

Satoransky explained that the team’s foreign players are offered the option to reside in Sofia, a city he described as more appealing than many expect. He noted that professional athletes often live in a bubble, spending most of their time in a residential complex close to the airport, arena, and school, similar to his experience in Barcelona. Due to league rules allowing only five foreign players on the roster, there will likely be rotation, enabling him to have some weekends off from playing in Israel.

He clarified that he will not be the primary point guard, as Vasilije Micić holds that role, and Satoransky expects to be the second or third option, which fits his desire for a less intensive role in the EuroLeague. Satoransky’s career includes eight NBA seasons with teams such as the Washington Wizards, Chicago Bulls, New Orleans Pelicans, and San Antonio Spurs, as well as two stints with Barcelona. He aims to make a deep run in the EuroLeague this season, despite playing fewer minutes.

This signing comes after Hapoel Tel Aviv initially committed to having its core players based in Israel but reversed that decision recently due to security tensions. Satoransky’s comments shed light on the club’s strategy to attract foreign talent by offering flexible living arrangements amid ongoing regional uncertainties.
