Hapoel Tel Aviv Basketball Star Tomas Satoransky Cites Bulgaria Base and Rest as Key to Signing

Tomas Satoransky, the Czech point guard and former Barcelona and NBA player, opened up in a recent interview in his homeland about his decision to join Hapoel Tel Aviv. The 34-year-old revealed that the club's unique arrangement to train and host EuroLeague games in Sofia, Bulgaria, due to Israel's security situation, was a major factor in his move. This setup allows foreign players to skip Israeli domestic league games and avoid frequent travel, which appealed to Satoransky as he sought to reduce his physical load.

Satoransky explained that the team flies to Israel every weekend for league matches, but only five foreign players can be registered per game, requiring rotation. He valued the option to stay in Sofia and rest on some weekends, especially after a demanding previous season. The player also disclosed ongoing back problems and the need to lessen his playing time, noting that at Hapoel Tel Aviv he would serve as a secondary or tertiary point guard behind Vasilije Micić.

His comments come amid Hapoel Tel Aviv's recent struggles with foreign players reluctant to travel to Israel during heightened regional tensions, which led the club's management, including owner Ofer Yanai, to establish the Bulgaria base to provide stability and peace of mind. Satoransky emphasized his competitive drive and disappointment with Barcelona's lack of investment in recent years, expressing enthusiasm about joining a club with a visionary owner aiming for EuroLeague success.

He also shared that his family will live in a secure residential complex near the arena and an international school in Sofia, highlighting their adaptability from previous relocations during his NBA career. Satoransky is ready to contribute fully to the team while managing his health and workload in this new chapter.
