Family of Fallen Israeli Officer Receives Lost Military Kit Bag After Two Years

More than two years after the death of Captain Eitan Fish in combat in the Gaza Strip, his family unexpectedly received a personal military kit bag that had been lost due to a mix-up involving similar surnames. Captain Fish, a 23-year-old armored corps officer from the settlement of Peduel, fell on December 4, 2023, during fighting in Gaza. He was known as a talented young man who loved painting and music, and served as a dedicated and beloved commander in the 53rd Battalion of the 188th Brigade (Barak).

Following his death, the family commemorated him in various ways, including murals he painted and distributing stickers bearing his artwork to first graders. Over 15 babies have been named after him. The recent discovery of the kit bag occurred when a resident of Peduel named Fisher, who had rented out his home during a relocation to the United States, returned and found the military bag in one of the rooms. It is believed the bag was mistakenly left behind due to confusion between the similar surnames Fish and Fisher.

The kit bag was stored in the house for an unknown reason and only found upon the homeowner’s return. Through a mutual acquaintance, the bag was returned to the Fish family. The parents described the emotional moment of opening the bag, which still carried the scent of the army and contained various unidentified items. They called it "another greeting from Eitan," reflecting on the ongoing connection to their lost son. Among the items was a disconnected radio tube, prompting a poignant reflection from his father, who spoke into it with no response, wondering where Eitan was when needed.

This unexpected return of the kit bag has brought a powerful and bittersweet reminder of Captain Fish’s life and sacrifice to his family, adding a new chapter to their ongoing remembrance of him.
