Israel Prepares Multiple Viewing Sites for 2026 Perseids Meteor Shower Peak in August

The annual Perseids meteor shower is expected to peak between August 9 and 13, 2026, offering a spectacular natural display visible without special equipment. This phenomenon occurs as Earth passes through the debris trail of the Swift-Tuttle comet, producing up to 80 to 100 meteors per hour at its height. To experience the best views, experts recommend visiting dark desert locations free from light pollution.

Several sites across Israel are organizing special events and observation opportunities. In northern Israel, the Jordan Star National Park will host a Perseids night on August 13, featuring guided tours, telescope stations, and expert astronomy commentary. Visitors can also stay overnight at the park’s night camp. In the Negev Desert, multiple free-access night camps such as Ein Yarkam and Mishor Yamin offer ideal dark skies for meteor watching, with guidelines to preserve the natural environment.

The Central Arava Regional Council is organizing a month-long series of astronomy events culminating in a Perseids viewing party on August 13 with expert guides and a campfire. The annual "Nokdim with Stars" festival in the Judean Desert will run from late July through August, combining astronomy, desert experiences, and cultural activities.

Finally, Timna Park in southern Israel will offer a unique meteor viewing experience with astronomy guides pointing out constellations and galaxies, and lights will be turned off at 10 p.m. to optimize viewing conditions. Participants are advised to bring warm clothing, closed shoes, blankets, and telescopes or binoculars for the best experience.
