US General Warns of Inability to Defend Israel Without Additional Naval Destroyer in Middle East

General Alexus Grinkevich, commander of the US European Command, has warned senior Pentagon officials that without deploying an additional destroyer to the Middle East, he may have to prioritize defending the US homeland over Israel. According to the Washington Post, Grinkevich conveyed in writing that he cannot guarantee protection for Israel against ballistic missile attacks without increased naval resources.

A US security official noted that this warning reflects ongoing competition among generals for limited weapons and resources. The US Navy has been actively enforcing a blockade on Iran and has intercepted missile launches targeting Israel, including attacks from Iran-backed Houthi forces in Yemen. The report comes amid rising concerns over renewed intense conflict between the US, Israel, and Iran following the collapse of a fragile ceasefire based on a Washington-Tehran memorandum.

Recent reports indicate that US interceptor missile stocks in the Middle East have significantly depleted after months of fighting. The Washington Post highlighted that US destroyers in the Mediterranean have long supported Israel's defense missions by using powerful radar and missile systems to intercept threats from Iran and its proxies.

US Central Command, responsible for coordinating military operations in the Middle East and preparing for potential Russian aggression against NATO territories, currently has five destroyers stationed in the region, with a sixth expected by the end of 2026. However, Pentagon officials cited maintenance challenges exacerbated by intensified conflict with Iran, complicating General Grinkevich's operational capabilities.
