US General Warns of Shortage in Warships to Defend Israel Against Ballistic Missiles

General Alexus Grinkevich, commander of the US European Command (EUCOM), has issued a written warning to the Pentagon highlighting a shortage of US Navy destroyers capable of intercepting ballistic missiles aimed at Israel, according to a report by The Washington Post on Saturday. Sources familiar with the matter told the newspaper that the general emphasized the need for an additional destroyer; otherwise, he would have to prioritize defending US territories over Israel.

The ongoing strain on the US Navy, caused by the conflict with Iran and the maritime blockade in the Persian Gulf, has complicated the maintenance of destroyers deployed in the region. Internal Pentagon assessments indicate that US military forces played a crucial role in protecting Israel during previous ballistic missile launches from Iran, utilizing THAAD missile defense systems and destroyers stationed in the eastern Mediterranean.

In addition to its responsibilities in the Middle East, EUCOM must maintain readiness and deterrence against threats from Russia and its long-range missiles, increasing competition for the command's limited resources. Amid rising tensions, the US is also expanding production of Patriot missiles. This development comes as the situation in the Gulf heats up and former President Trump has issued stern warnings regarding the conflict.
