IDF Plans Expanded Engineering Operations to Destroy Hamas Tunnels in Gaza

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) are preparing to expand their operational control in the Gaza Strip through extensive engineering activities aimed at demolishing Hamas' underground tunnel network. According to a senior security official, the Southern Command, Ground Forces, and the Technology and Logistics Directorate are coordinating to target tunnels that have so far remained unaddressed by Israeli forces. Recent data presented to Defense Minister Israel Katz indicate a high rate of success in neutralizing Hamas tunnels, alongside deployment of capabilities to detect and prevent the construction or repair of new tunnels within the "yellow line" area under IDF operational control.

The plan involves integrating a large amount of heavy engineering machinery operated primarily by IDF personnel rather than civilian contractors, with the goal of maximizing the use of military engineering equipment over the next year. The Southern Command insists on eliminating critical offensive tunnels that Hamas has invested significant resources in building over many years, thereby degrading the terror group's subterranean combat capabilities.

Meanwhile, the manhunt continues for Hamas military commanders and naval unit operatives who crossed into Israel on October 7. Intelligence efforts by the Navy, Military Intelligence (AMAN), and the Shin Bet focus on preventing the rehabilitation of Hamas’ naval unit, which poses a threat of renewed attacks on Israel and strategic facilities. This comprehensive approach reflects ongoing efforts to dismantle Hamas’ military infrastructure both above and below ground in Gaza.
