Magen David Adom Issues Heatwave Safety Guidelines Ahead of Intense Heat in Israel
Magen David Adom (MDA) released safety recommendations on Thursday as Israel braces for a severe heatwave expected to last through Monday. Dr. Rafael Strugo, MDA's Deputy Director of Medical Services, emphasized the need for public vigilance to prevent dehydration and heatstroke amid the high temperatures forecasted across the country.
Special attention should be given to infants and toddlers, ensuring they are never left unattended in closed vehicles, even briefly. Families are also urged to maintain regular contact with elderly relatives to monitor for heat-related health issues.
MDA's guidelines include drinking at least three liters of water daily, avoiding outdoor work or sun exposure during peak heat hours, and refraining from visiting the beach except at designated times with lifeguards present. Physical activity is recommended only during cooler evening hours. Additional precautions include checking car rear seats before exiting to prevent children from being left behind, keeping pets indoors with accessible water, and avoiding walks with animals during hot periods to prevent burns from hot pavement. Providing water for stray cats is also advised.
The advisory comes amid widespread heatwaves affecting Europe, with France reporting over 2,000 heat-related deaths and Spain declaring a national emergency due to extensive wildfires.
