Report: Carsen Edwards Nears EuroLeague Move to Zalgiris
Carsen Edwards, one of the EuroLeague's top scorers, is expected to sign with Zalgiris Kaunas, according to a Saturday morning report by BasketNews editor-in-chief Donatas Urbonas. The Israeli outlet Sports 5 noted that Edwards, who had been linked with Maccabi Tel Aviv, is in the final stages of negotiations with the Lithuanian club.
Edwards would join a rebuilt backcourt after Zalgiris lost Sylvain Francisco, who had led the team in recent years before leaving for ASVEL Villeurbanne. Edwards played last season for Virtus Bologna and left when his contract expired.
An Italian report from about a week earlier said Zalgiris had offered him $2 million per season, which likely pushed the deal forward. Last summer, Edwards had already agreed to a $1.5 million-per-season deal with Maccabi Tel Aviv, but his family opposed the move because of the security situation.
The 1.80-meter guard averaged 17.3 points and 2.3 assists per game this season, shooting 46.7% on twos and 31.9% from three. He ranked fifth in EuroLeague scoring.
