Israeli Security Forces Arrest Settler Wearing IDF Uniform After Violent June Attack on Palestinian Town

Israeli police announced the arrest of a young man from the West Bank on Wednesday, suspected of involvement in a violent attack on Palestinians in the town of Hawara last month. The suspect was seen wearing Israel Defense Forces (IDF) uniform during the assault, but investigations revealed he is not a soldier but a member of a local security team in the Judea and Samaria area. Authorities confiscated an M16 rifle and a pistol from him.

The attack occurred on June 6, when a group of masked settlers raided Hawara, alleging theft of livestock. The assailants arrived in pickup trucks and threw stones at residents. Videos showed some attackers beating two Palestinians with sticks, including the suspect in IDF uniform. Palestinians reported nine people injured in the clashes. Following the incident, IDF forces were deployed, and investigators from the Judea and Samaria district began collecting evidence. Several suspects were detained, and one indictment has been filed.

Residents of Hawara described significant damage to agricultural buildings, vehicles, and infrastructure, as well as theft of sheep and property. One local, Yosef Odeh, recounted being violently attacked and his flock stolen. He expressed frustration over the ongoing situation and lack of effective protection. Security forces, including Border Police and Shin Bet agents, tracked down the suspect early Wednesday morning after he had been in hiding since the attack. The suspect will be brought in for a remand extension.

The municipality of Hawara called for urgent medical assistance following the attack. Witnesses reported delayed arrival of security forces after the violence began. The incident highlights ongoing tensions and violence between settlers and Palestinian residents in the West Bank.
