Israeli Supreme Court Suspends Yeshiva Students' Arrest Law Pending Final Ruling

The Israeli Supreme Court issued an interim injunction on Tuesday to suspend the enforcement of a controversial amendment to the Security Service Law designed to prevent the arrest of yeshiva students. The nine-judge panel ruled that the law's implementation will be frozen until a final judgment is delivered, which they promised to issue promptly.

The decision followed a dramatic hearing earlier in the day, where the court examined petitions challenging the amendment. Knesset representative and lawyer Yitzhak Bert argued that the amendment violated legislative procedures, as it introduced a new subject unrelated to the original bill. He stated, "There is no choice but to cancel the law." Bert explained that the original bill focused on integrating yeshiva students into the IDF, national service, and employment while reducing inequality, whereas the amendment halted enforcement actions, a fundamentally different issue.

The government's legal advisor had previously declared an inability to defend the law due to its legal complications. The amendment was pushed by ultra-Orthodox parties as a temporary measure to prevent arrests of yeshiva students until a new conscription law is established. The Supreme Court's interim order maintains the status quo until the final ruling is issued.
