IDF Warns Illegal West Bank Outposts Divert Forces From Counterterrorism Duties

The Israeli military and security officials have raised concerns about the growing number of unauthorized outposts and farms in the West Bank, warning that these sites are diverting troops from counterterrorism operations. Currently, there are approximately 70 outposts and between 120 to 150 farms scattered across Judea and Samaria. While some are established with state approval and receive security proportional to the threat level, many others lack official authorization and complicate military efforts.

A security source told N12 that since a deadly attack in the West Bank three days ago, at least five new illegal outposts have been set up. These unauthorized sites often require redeployment of soldiers originally assigned to combat Palestinian terrorism, thereby reducing operational focus. The farms, some coordinated with the IDF and located on state lands in Area C, vary in security measures, including permanent guards, surveillance cameras, and rapid response units. However, many are situated near Palestinian villages and agricultural lands, increasing friction and sometimes leading to clashes that necessitate military intervention to prevent escalation.

The IDF does not have a fixed quota for forces assigned to protect these farms, with troop deployment fluctuating based on threat assessments and regional conditions. This additional security burden adds to the existing operational load, which includes counterterrorism, arrests, securing roads, and offensive activities throughout the West Bank.

The Chief of Staff, Lieutenant General Herzi Halevi, has repeatedly warned of a manpower crisis, emphasizing that without immediate legislative reforms to conscription, reserve duty, and extending regular service, the military’s combat capabilities will collapse. Recently, the Knesset approved extending mandatory service from 30 to 32 months, though the IDF demands 36 months and other reforms to sustain force readiness.

The recent attack near the Gilad farm in the West Bank resulted in the deaths of two reservists, Staff Sergeant Benyahu Malt and Staff Sergeant Major Yuval Ezra, with two others wounded. The assailant was killed after stealing a weapon from security personnel in the area. This incident has intensified scrutiny over the security challenges posed by the proliferation of unauthorized outposts and farms in the region.
