Toronto Police Investigate Shooting and Vandalism at Jewish Bakery Chain Amid Rising Antisemitism in Canada

Toronto police are investigating two separate attacks on branches of the Jewish bakery chain Kiva's Bagel Bar that occurred on Sunday. In one incident, shots were fired at a bakery, shattering a window, while in the other, a window was broken. No injuries were reported in either case. Authorities are examining whether the two attacks are connected and are actively searching for suspects. The investigation involves the hate crimes unit and a joint task force combating weapons and gang violence.

Following the incidents, B'nai Brith Canada issued a strong statement condemning the attacks as part of a growing wave of antisemitism in the country. The organization emphasized that these bakeries serve as community gathering places for families, and that shooting at a Jewish business should alarm all Canadians. They praised the police for their swift response but warned that such violence reflects a broader trend of extremist violence fueled by anti-Zionist rhetoric, local criminal elements, Iran-backed groups, and ISIS-inspired terrorism.

B'nai Brith Canada called on Canadian leaders to unequivocally denounce the attacks, ensure law enforcement has adequate resources to protect Jewish communities and institutions, and establish a federal inquiry into the rise of antisemitic incidents nationwide. According to their data, 27 violent antisemitic events have been recorded in Canada since early 2026, more than double the 10 incidents documented in all of 2025. The group noted that 2026 is on track to be the second most violent year after 2023, which saw 77 antisemitic attacks following the Hamas terror attack on October 7 and the ensuing war.

Additionally, security footage captured an unrelated incident in Toronto where an individual threw eggs at a Jewish community center, further highlighting the tense environment for Jewish Canadians.
