IDF Launches Extensive Operation in West Bank After Deadly Shooting Attack

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) have initiated a large-scale operation across the West Bank following a deadly shooting attack near the village of Tel in Samaria on Friday morning. The attack resulted in the death of Binyahu Malat, a member of the Gilad Farm security team, and injuries to two other Israelis. In response, the IDF imposed a lockdown on exits from the area, significantly reinforced its forces, and intensified counterterrorism activities at key flashpoints.

Initial investigations indicate that a group of Israeli hikers arrived near Tel without prior coordination with the IDF. As they passed by the local mosque, a confrontation erupted with Palestinians present. Security personnel from Gilad Farm and IDF forces were called to the scene. During the clash, one Palestinian assailant reportedly seized a security guard’s personal weapon and opened fire on the hikers and security forces. Binyahu Malat was killed while assisting the troops. The shooter was subsequently neutralized by the IDF, and the stolen weapon was recovered.

The cities of Nablus (Shechem) and Tel remain surrounded as security forces conduct extensive counterterrorism operations, including searches, arrests of suspects, and expanded security measures around conflict zones. The security establishment notes a recent escalation in violence in the area, with nearly nightly counterterrorism operations in the West Bank. Over the past week, more than 80 suspects have been detained, including Hamas operatives and individuals involved in incitement, stone-throwing, Molotov cocktail attacks, and bomb-making.

Currently, the IDF maintains 24 battalions in the West Bank, including 10 reserve battalions, with additional reinforcements deployed to the front lines and hotspots. The enhanced military presence aims to enable rapid responses to any further attacks. Security forces are also preparing for Malat’s funeral, anticipating a large turnout and requiring special security arrangements. Officials emphasize that the operation will continue in the coming days, adapting to developments on the ground and ongoing threat assessments.
