Manchester Terrorist Planned Attack on British Defense Academy Targeting IDF Soldiers

Jihad Al-Shami, the 35-year-old terrorist behind the October 2, 2025, attack at the Heaton Park synagogue in Manchester, was recorded on security cameras at a UK mosque discussing plans with fellow jihadist Muhammad Bashir. The two men plotted an attack on the British Defence Academy in Oxfordshire, where they believed Israeli Defense Forces (IDF) soldiers were training. Bashir, a 31-year-old delivery driver, is now facing prison for driving Al-Shami on a reconnaissance trip to the academy two months before the synagogue attack.

Al-Shami, a Manchester resident, rammed his car into a security guard outside the synagogue on Yom Kippur, then fatally stabbed 66-year-old Melvin Kravitz. Wearing a fake explosive belt, he was shot dead by police while worshippers barricaded inside. Tragically, a stray bullet killed 53-year-old Adrian Daulby, who helped prevent the attacker from entering. Court evidence revealed that Al-Shami and Bashir had planned to attack the Defence Academy to target IDF soldiers allegedly training there.

Bashir admitted to facilitating the terror plot by driving Al-Shami on a 10-hour round trip to the academy on August 14, 2025. They spent 13 minutes near the site before returning. Prosecutor Jonathan Polanyi stated the plan involved weapons intended to cause mass casualties with national and international impact. The Defence Academy trains British armed forces, government personnel, industry, and foreign teams, hosting up to 4,000 people at any time.

After the reconnaissance, both men discarded their phones. Al-Shami was arrested twice in 2025, with his phones seized and only examined after the synagogue attack, revealing WhatsApp messages and voice notes between him and Bashir. The messages showed their extremist views and preparations for violence. Security footage from the Al-Sunna mosque in Manchester showed them researching "IDF soldiers in the UK" and discussing storming the Defence Academy.

Bashir, who holds British and Pakistani citizenship, left for Pakistan with his family two days after the synagogue attack but was arrested upon returning to Manchester Airport on November 27. He pleaded guilty in June to preparing a terror attack and distributing terrorist material encouraging suicide attacks via WhatsApp. Sentencing is ongoing.
