Manchester Terror Attack Accomplice Admits Planning Another Attack

Mohammed Bashir, 31, the accomplice of the Manchester synagogue attacker, pleaded guilty to preparing a terrorist act during a court hearing in Manchester on Wednesday. Bashir and Jihad al-Shami, who carried out the attack on a synagogue in Britain on Yom Kippur last year, conducted a 10-hour reconnaissance trip to the UK Defence Academy in Swindon on August 14, 2023. They spent about 15 minutes at the site before deliberately destroying their mobile phones. Prosecutor Jonathan Polnay told the court that the two shared extremist views and planned an attack intended to cause mass casualties and have national and international impact.

Investigations revealed that days before the reconnaissance, the pair were recorded at the Al-Sunna mosque in Chatham Hill discussing acquiring weapons and expressing willingness to sacrifice their lives, referencing the Islamic concept of "green birds of paradise" associated with martyrs. Al-Shami’s phone contained detailed notes about the reception area of the Defence Academy. Although Bashir was closely involved in planning the attack and researching details about Israeli soldiers training in Britain and suicide vests, prosecutors stated there is no evidence linking him directly to the synagogue attack itself.

Al-Shami later shifted focus to a synagogue in Hitchin Park, researching local rabbis, knives, and travel bags before launching the deadly attack on July 2, 2023, killing Melvin Cracraft and Adrian Dolbi before being shot dead by police. Bashir was arrested at Manchester Airport in November 2023 and charged with preparing terrorist acts related to the military base plot, but not the synagogue attack. Sentencing is pending before Judge Jima-Grove.

The original attack on Yom Kippur last year involved al-Shami killing two Jews near the Manchester synagogue and injuring four others, three seriously. The attacker, dressed in black and wearing a vest, was reportedly known to authorities and suspected of carrying an explosive belt. Eyewitnesses described the attacker driving erratically into the synagogue gate, stabbing worshippers, and targeting Jewish men wearing kippahs. Police declared a "plato" emergency code during the response to the terror attack.
